MPV (mean platelet volume)

Blood count value that shows the average size of your platelets

Also known as

MPV mean platelet volume

Definition

MPV (mean platelet volume) shows how large your platelets (thrombocytes) are on average. Platelets are made in the bone marrow and stick together to form clots after an injury. Newly made platelets are larger than older ones, so MPV gives a hint as to whether the bone marrow is making many new platelets. The value is usually measured with the complete blood count and read together with the platelet count.

Parameter Value
Unit fl (femtoliters)
Reference Range No single range: MPV is compared with the reference range of the individual lab, which varies with the analyzer and method. The range printed on your own report is what counts; your doctor interprets the result.

↓ What a low value means

A low MPV means your platelets are smaller than usual. This can indicate that the bone marrow is not making enough new platelets. Possible links include certain cancers, side effects of medicines, aplastic anemia, autoimmune diseases, bacterial or viral infections, genetic conditions and alcohol use disorder. MPV alone is not a diagnosis; discuss any deviation with your doctor.

↑ What a high value means

A high MPV means your platelets are larger than usual. This can indicate that older platelets are being broken down at an increased rate and the bone marrow is making many new ones. Possible links include a lack of platelets (thrombocytopenia), myeloproliferative diseases, preeclampsia during pregnancy, heart disease, diabetes and hemolytic anemia. MPV alone is not a diagnosis; discuss any deviation with your doctor.

When to test

MPV is usually measured with the complete blood count at a routine check-up. Other reasons are signs of a platelet disorder such as prolonged bleeding, nosebleeds, bleeding gums when brushing, small red or purple spots on the skin, easy bruising or unusually heavy periods. No special preparation is needed, except for any additional tests ordered.

Frequently asked questions

Why is MPV read together with the platelet count? +

The platelet count shows how many platelets are in your blood; MPV shows how large they are on average. Only together with other findings does a more complete picture emerge. According to MedlinePlus, an MPV result alone cannot diagnose a condition.

Why does platelet size say something about the bone marrow? +

Newly made platelets are larger than older ones. A higher MPV can therefore mean the bone marrow is making many new platelets, a lower one that it is making fewer. Your doctor puts the result in context.

Which factors can affect MPV? +

According to MedlinePlus, age, sex, ethnic background, lifestyle such as diet, smoking, alcohol use and physical activity, and genes can affect both MPV and the platelet count.

Do I need to fast for the test? +

Not for MPV itself. If other values are measured from the same sample, you may be asked not to eat or drink for a few hours. The practice will tell you beforehand whether this is needed.
